2018 Year in Review

Happy New Year, everyone! All of us here at Valley Children’s Hospital want to thank you for a fantastic 2018. Let’s review all the amazing events we accomplished and the miracles we were able to make happen!

Last year was filled with incredible campaigns from Children’s Hospitals Week, to the Rite Aid, Costco, Walmart, Walgreens, Loves Travel Shops, Vallarta Supermarket, Panda Express and many other POS campaigns. It was a successful year full of fundraising and support! Thank you for participating and helping us reach our goals here at Valley Children’s.

We’re so grateful for these 2018 top five fundraising partners:

  • Panda Express
  • Costco
  • Walmart
  • Credit Union for Kids
  • McLane Pacific

Here are some remarkable ways the generous donations are being used at Valley Children’s.

Expansion Needs/Renovations:

Valley Children’s is establishing sites throughout the Central Valley with the long-term goal of expanding access for Valley families. Our goal is to have families throughout the region be within 30 minutes or 30 miles of a Valley Children’s specialist.

  • We recently completed a specialty care center in Bakersfield
  • We are building new specialty care centers in Modesto, Fowler, Fresno and Visalia
  • We are currently in a six-year major renovation of the main campus to remain a state-of-the-art hospital

Equipment:

Purchase of advanced technology systems and cutting-edge equipment, including:

  • EOS Imaging Machine takes full-body scans in less than 20 seconds and emits 1/10th the radiation of normal X-ray machines. This is the first of its kind in the Central Valley.
  • Robotic Surgical Assistant (ROSA) improves accuracy and dramatically reduces surgery/anesthesia time for kids with epilepsy
  • Simulation mannequins for Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)

Research:

Valley Children’s conducts research to advance pediatric medicine and improve cure rates.

  • We are active in 166 research studies
  • We are among the top 5-8 percent in the nation in patient enrollments to the Children’s Oncology Group, the world’s largest organization devoted to childhood cancer research

Education:

Valley Children’s trains the next generation of physicians and providers to alleviate the region’s physician shortage and ensure that kids stay healthy.

  • We have our own Pediatric Residency Program with more than 25 residents
  • With other medical schools, we also provide clinical training to more than 200 residents and medical students and 900 nurses and allied health professionals a year

Charitable care:

Philanthropy helps close the gap for families who cannot afford medical care.

  • 1 in 3 children in our service area live in poverty, one of the highest rates in the nation. That is over 400,000 kids living below the poverty line.
  • 78 percent of our patients utilize Medi-Cal as their primary form of insurance

Also, we are proud to have participated and held these events in 2018:

  • Walmart surpassing $1 Billion of fundraising in the U.S. and Canada since 1987
  • First Dance Marathon at Fresno State raising more than $10,000
  • 4th Annual “Futures Worth Fighting For” Telethon with ABC30 raising more than $216,000
  • 20th Anniversary of the KISS Country for Kids Radiothon with FM93.7 raising more than $183,000
  • Radio Merced LOBO FM98.7 Radiothon raising more than $75,000

Thank you for your thoughtful donations and for helping make 2018 unforgettable. Let’s take this great success into the new year and continue making miracles happen!!
