A Room for Joie

Joie Macedo was a normal 2-year-old child playing outdoors at her family’s farm when she contracted a very rare E. Coli infection. After showing signs of severe fever and gastrointestinal issues, her family immediately rushed her to Valley Children’s Hospital for treatment. Soon doctors diagnosed Joie with Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, a condition that can occur when the small blood vessels in the kidneys become damaged and inflamed. Clots can clog the filtering system in the kidneys and lead to kidney failure, which could be life-threatening.

Joie’s stay at Valley Children’s turned from days to weeks, but her skillful doctors in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit were able to stop the infection and help her back on her feet.

The Macedo family was so grateful for Joie’s recovery that they raised $33,925 amongst their family and friends which they donated to the recent “Kiss Country for Kids Radiothon” benefitting the Hospital.

In November 2019, Room 1710 in the Craycroft Unit was also dedicated in “Celebration of Joie Macedo.” Family members and friends joined Valley Children’s Craycroft staff along with Dr. Linda Keele and Dr. Laide Jinadu for the room dedication and check presentation.

Thank you Macedo Family for your incredible generosity!
